Western Union is rolling out a dedicated digital wallet and Visa-backed payment card designed to let users store money in U.S. dollar stablecoins and spend it directly at traditional checkout counters.

Dubbed Stablecard, the service is going live across 37 initial markets, with plans to expand to more than 60 countries by the end of the year. The platform allows users to receive cross-border transfers directly as digital dollars and spend them anywhere Visa is accepted worldwide.

Bridging Remittances and Everyday Spending

For people receiving cross-border remittances, particularly in countries experiencing severe currency devaluation, holding local fiat can quickly erode earned income. While stablecoins offer a way to preserve purchasing power by pegging value to the U.S. dollar, using them for daily necessities usually requires converting tokens through crypto exchanges or transferring funds back into local bank accounts.

Stablecard removes that friction by linking a U.S. dollar digital asset wallet directly to a Visa card. Instead of manually off-ramping tokens, cardholders can instantly use their stablecoin balance to pay for groceries, shop online, withdraw cash from ATMs, or load the card into digital payment platforms like Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Powered by Solana and Rain Infrastructure

The app uses USDPT, a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on the Solana blockchain. Each USDPT token is redeemable 1:1 for U.S. dollars and supported by audited reserves.

Behind the wallet and card infrastructure is Rain, an enterprise crypto payment platform operating as a Visa Principal Member. Rain handles the card issuing, compliance, and settlement rails under the hood. This setup lets Western Union customers manage stablecoin balances without needing to handle blockchain gas fees or manage private crypto keys.

Through the Stablecard mobile app on iOS and Android, users can:

  • Receive Western Union money transfers directly into their USDPT wallet balance.
  • Hold funds in USDPT to protect against local currency fluctuations.
  • Send and receive funds to and from external digital asset wallets and exchanges.
  • Spend their balance globally wherever Visa is accepted.

Remittance Giants Turn to Public Blockchains

The rollout marks one of the most prominent integrations of public blockchain rails by a legacy money movement provider. Rather than keeping user balances locked strictly within proprietary closed-loop financial networks, Western Union is providing users direct access to public ledger assets backed by a regulated custodian.

By prioritizing 37 initial markets where local currency instability is high and demand for digital dollars is already established, Western Union and Rain are attempting to turn stablecoins into mainstream cash alternatives, tapping into Visa’s global network to bridge onchain balances with everyday commerce.
