SUI Faces Fresh Unlock as Bulls Target a Run to $20

by Gavin Gill

Key Takeaways

A Token Unlock Lands Right on Schedule

Sui’s August 1 token unlock released about 13.72 million SUI into circulation, split across three groups, i.e. 4 million to the community reserve, 7.65 million to early contributors, and 2.07 million to the Mysten Labs treasury. At current prices, the release was worth roughly $9.9 million, or about 0.34% of its circulating supply.

Bitcoin.com News flagged the release in a July 29 report, noting it was part of a broader $81 million weekly token unlock wave across the market, topped by artist-token platform Audiera (BEAT). Unlike BEAT’s cliff-style release, Sui distributes tokens through continuous daily vesting, a design analysts say tends to spread out selling pressure rather than dumping a large percentage of supply on a single day, the way cliff unlocks for tokens like EigenLayer’s EIGEN or Kite AI’s KITE can.

Sui is a layer-1 blockchain built by Mysten Labs, a startup five former Meta engineers founded in 2021 after working on the company’s abandoned Novi wallet and Diem stablecoin projects. The network positions itself around high transaction throughput and low fees, and roughly 4.05 billion of its 10 billion maximum token supply is already in circulation, putting it at about 40% of its eventual total.

Bulls Call It a Buy Zone

Popular trader CryptoPatel argued earlier today that SUI’s recent range represents a high-timeframe accumulation structure rather than a warning sign. He pointed to an entry zone between $0.50 and $0.70, with price targets of $5, $10 and eventually $20, claiming the pattern was “too clean to ignore.”

Cryptopatel's technical analysis where he claims SUI could be headed to $20.

SUI’s actual trading price of $0.68 sits right inside that stated entry zone, though the broader backdrop looks less clean than the chart pattern alone suggests. The token has fallen more than 5% over the past several trading sessions as the total crypto market capitalization slipped roughly 2.3% and altcoin market capitalization dropped nearly 2%.

Social sentiment readings for SUI have turned mildly bearish, and short-term traders have flipped cautious around the $0.71 to $0.73 support band, with some technical analysts warning that a failure to hold that zone could open the door to further declines.

The Fundamentals Behind the Price

Sui’s underlying network activity has told a different story than its price action. To this point, Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala Capital launched a $75 million tokenized version of its private markets fund on July 23, live across Solana, Base and Sui. The fund uses tokenization infrastructure from KAIO and requires a roughly $100,000 minimum buy-in from qualified investors, keeping the offering institutional rather than retail-facing.

Sui has also seen a Hashi testnet launch aimed at institutional bitcoin collateral use cases, alongside continued rollout of fee-free stablecoin transfers on the network. Lastly, no credible reports of a network outage, exploit or other protocol-level issue have surfaced, meaning this week’s price softness traces back to unlock-driven supply and broader market conditions rather than any problem with Sui itself.

That gap between network activity and token price is a familiar pattern across the industry, where new integrations and institutional partnerships often take months to show up in trading volume or price, while token unlocks hit supply on a fixed, publicly known schedule.
